Welcome Reception 21 June 2010

RHKView_of_the_South_Wing_fronted_by_the_fountain2.jpgRHK_inside1small2.jpgThis year's Welcome Reception will take place on Monday 21 June in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, a 17th century home for retired soldiers, which is now home to the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

Transport will be provided to and from DCU for this event.

Conference Excursion 23 June 2010

A number of options are available for half day excursions in and around Dublin.

glendalough tower_sml.jpg Glendalough This tour will take a scenic route out of Dublin through the Wicklow Gap and the Blessington Lakes. The Glendalough Valley is located in the Wicklow Mountains National Park and has many attractions, from the world famous 6th century Monastic Site with Round Tower to its scenic lakes and valleys, as well as a selection of walks and trails in the area including the Wicklow Way. dublin_bay_and_castle_tour.jpg  Dublin Bay & Malahide Castle Your visit to Malahide will include a guided tour of the castle, dating back to the 12th century, with time to wander around the craft shops and castle grounds, which span some 250 acres. This will be followed by a scenic drive along Dublin's spectacular northern coastline passing through the picturesque fishing village of Howth. The trail back to Dublin includes a stop at Howth summit for breathtaking views of Dublin Bay. 
national stud.jpg  Irish National Stud & Japanese Gardens The Irish Stud is set amid 958 acres of land and is the only stud farm in Ireland open to the public. Attractions include the Irish National Stud - home to some of Ireland's finest thoroughbreds; the Japanese Gardens - the finest Japanese Gardens in Europe; Saint Fiachra's Gardens - featuring woodland walks, monastic cells and a Waterford Crystal garden; and the Horse Museum - a state of the art modern exhibition. japanese gardens.jpg 
Newgrange/Knowth This magnificent UNESCO World Hertiage Site is dated 3,200 B.C. and contains one of the oldest and largest Neolithic burial chambers in Europe, predating the Egyptian pyramids. You will begin in the Bru na Boinne Visitors Centre, and as part of your experience will then be taken on a guided tour of the ancient tombs of Newgrange or Knowth.  newgrange_tour.jpg 
howth lighthouse.jpgHowth_Harbour_-Ireland.jpg  Howth Walking Tours Howth is a picturesque fishing village situated on the scenic Howth peninsula north of Dublin city. You can explore Howth's many cafes and fish restaurants, pubs and bars, historic sites, towers and castles or participate in a superb 7 km circular cliff walk around the headland. Howth Head gives fine views of Dublin Bay and the Wicklow Mountains. In the bay is the rocky bird sanctuary and monastic island of Ireland's Eye, to which boat trips may be taken. 

 


Gala Event 24 June 2010

The conference Gala evening will take place on Thursday 24th June in the Guinness Storehouse, in the heart of the original Guinness brewery. On entrance you will be given a short tour of the Storehouse. In a break from tradition, this will be followed by an informal buffet, with a mixture of seated and standing dining. The event will take place over two levels with live music on the lower floor and the opportunity to take in the panoramic views over the city from the bar on the top floor.

 

Transport will be provided to and from DCU for this event.
